10 Practical Tips

for Managing Impulse Spending & Sticking to Your Budget

If you are tired of wondering where all your money went at the end of each month, and ready to ditch the paycheck-to-paycheck way of living, then you are in the right place. Simply follow these 10 practical tips and use the digital budget planner to streamline your finances and achieve greater financial stability.

  1. Create a Budget: Start by establishing a realistic budget that outlines your income, expenses, and savings goals. Having a clear financial plan provides a roadmap for managing your spending.

  2. Track Your Expenses: Keep a record of all your purchases to identify patterns and areas where you tend to overspend. Use budgeting apps or spreadsheets to track your expenses easily. I use the EveryDollar App and RocketMoney to track my spending and help me stay on track towards my financial goals.

  3. Set Spending Limits: Determine spending limits for different categories such as groceries, dining out, entertainment, and shopping. Think about your financial goals to help you stick to these limits to prevent overspending.

  4. Use Cash Envelopes: Allocate cash into envelopes for various spending categories each month. Once the cash in an envelope is depleted, refrain from spending more in that category until the next budgeting period. I love this budget binder that comes with cash envelopes. It’s the perfect size to throw in your purse and take with you so you can stick to the spending amount you have allocated in your envelopes. https://amzn.to/49aIbWe

  5. Wait Before Purchasing: Implement a "cooling-off" period before making non-essential purchases. Give yourself time to consider whether the item is a want or a need, and if it fits within your budget. This is especially important for large purchases. I have found that most of the time, if I “sleep on it” before making a large purchase, I decide that I really don’t need it and it does not fit in my budget or help me reach my financial goals.

  6. Avoid Temptation Triggers: Identify triggers that lead to impulsive spending, such as shopping malls or online sales. Limit exposure to these triggers or develop strategies to resist temptation, such as unsubscribing from marketing emails or leaving credit cards at home. Target is my weakness and I know this! I have to avoid unnecessary trips to Target when I do not have money allocated in my budget for this type of spending. I also take advantage of their drive-up orders. This way, I can order only what I need online and pick it up to avoid walking around the store and putting random things in my cart.

  7. Practice Mindful Spending: Before making a purchase, ask yourself if it aligns with your values and priorities. Consider the long-term impact of the purchase on your financial goals and whether it brings true satisfaction. When I pick up items in a store or scroll through sale items online, I stop and think how the item will serve me and my family. Being mindful about every item I purchase helps me to avoid clutter in my home and stick to my monthly budget.

  8. Comparison Shop: Research prices and shop around before making a purchase to ensure you're getting the best deal. Look for discounts, coupons, or alternative options that offer better value for your money. I can’t stress this one enough! Why pay more for the same item when you can get it for much less somewhere else? This is especially important when buying groceries because we have to buy them so often and food makes up a large portion of monthly spending.

  9. Find Free or Low-Cost Alternatives: Explore activities and hobbies that don't require spending a lot of money. Consider going on a hike or to a park. Borrow books from a library instead of purchasing them. Have a movie night at home instead of going to the theater. Or my family’s personal favorite, game night at home with our favorite sweet snacks.

  10. Reward Yourself Thoughtfully: Set aside a portion of your budget for occasional splurges or rewards, but do so intentionally. Choose rewards that align with your goals and budget, and make sure they don't derail your overall financial plan. I make sure to allocate money in my monthly budget for a date night once a month for my husband and I. I also set aside a little bit for self-care, such as a pedicure or a massage.
